Iris & Aimur | Fairy-tale Wedding in Saaremaa

“On March 5th, 2017 I came to a service at Kolgata church. I sat in the middle of the left row, looking around to see if I recognized any friendly faces. Among a few of those, sitting in the back of the right row, I spotted a blonde girl, who also seemed familiar somehow. I looked at her repeatedly over few-minute intervals and with that, a peculiar recognition kept growing in me along with a faint nervousness: “Who is she? Where does she come from? Have we met?” I knew that I absolutely had to get in contact with her. That allure, the feeling… knowing! My heart was pounding like I was a boy in love! Later I asked pastor Leho about who she might be that she seems so familiar somehow… Leho asked whether the name Iris, Iris Mäemets rings any bells? I shrugged and quickly wrote down the name on my phone.”

“That night getting home I found Iris on Facebook and wrote to her a polite letter, asking about where she’s from and describing the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had experienced that day. We walked across the castle hills, sat and ate at a restaurant, and finally got the chance to talk face-to-face. It was a beautiful evening and a pleasant feeling, I felt such peace and joy. The next day I gifted her flowers, as it happened to be Women’s Day. Since then we kept talking, meeting, and discovering each other more and more. We marveled at how similarly we think and value, how we complete each other, what unexplained peace and assurance we both sensed. And so it grew until engagement on January 5th, 2018.”

“It was the night of January 4th and the decision had been made. On the eve of the 5th, I was supposed to meet her at the bus coming from the countryside near Peipsi back to Tartu. I called her beforehand and asked whether she’d like to take an evening walk in the city and get something to eat, so she’d know to dress nice and warm. The next day I went to the city early, visited all the jewelry shops, and picked out what I thought was a beautiful ring; I booked a table at a restaurant and had it decorated. I planned on proposing in a quiet place without drawing too much attention because knowing Iris, she wouldn’t have enjoyed a grand show and public attention.”

“The bus arrived. It was a dark time of the year, we walked to Toomemäe. I was hoping for dry weather, but had to settle for a gentle drizzle, so we couldn’t go for a lengthy trip. I looked for a scenic view, a memorable place to propose to Iris. That place became the Angel Bridge. I got down on one knee, asked her to become my lovely wife, opened the ring box. Iris got startled, looked around, and at first in her haste said: “what, here?”. But then she looked at me, and it was a “yes”. The ring fit, she loved it, we took a selfie together, and discussed with excitement and humor the whole previous night – what we felt and thought. Then we walked hand-in-hand, I led her to eat, drink, and enjoy live music where I had booked the table.”
